Beginning the Journey
Starting a career in mental health therapy is both challenging and deeply rewarding. It’s a path that calls for dedication, empathy, and a commitment to ongoing learning.
During my time as a clinical intern at Allied Behavioral Health Solutions (ABHS), I’ve gained meaningful insight into what it means to walk alongside others on their mental health journeys.
Working with children and teens - especially those navigating significant life challenges - has shown me just how powerful therapy can be. This internship has strengthened my clinical skills and deepened my passion for supporting others as they heal, grow, and thrive.
Professional Development That Makes a Difference
ABHS has supported my growth through hands-on experience and intentional learning opportunities that helped me build real-world clinical skills.
One of the most impactful trainings I received was in the FAN (Facilitating Attuned Interactions) model. FAN helped me learn how to connect with clients - especially children - on a deeper emotional level. By focusing on listening, presence, and co-regulation, I was able to build stronger, more trusting relationships with the children and families I served.
The Value of Supervision & Clinical Consultation
Throughout my internship, clinical supervision and consultation played a vital role in my development. These reflective conversations gave me space to ask questions, celebrate progress, and refine my approach.
Working alongside experienced clinicians helped me grow in confidence and strengthened my ability to navigate complex cases. Peer collaboration also exposed me to different perspectives and reminded me that support matters — not just for our clients, but for us as clinicians, too.
Lessons from a Wide Range of Clients
One of the most meaningful parts of this internship has been the opportunity to support a wide range of clients — especially children involved with the Department of Child Services (DCS).
Many of these children carry deep emotional burdens tied to early instability, stress, or loss. Working with them taught me how to meet each child where they are, adjusting my approach based on their unique needs and life experiences.
Through these sessions, I’ve learned the power of patience, flexibility, and being fully present. More than anything, I’ve come to understand that feeling safe, seen, heard, and supported is the foundation for effective therapy - especially for children and families.
A Transformative Clinical Internship in Mental Health
My clinical internship at Allied Behavioral Health Solutions (ABHS) has been truly transformative.
From learning evidence-based models like FAN to supporting children in DCS care, I’ve gained a deeper understanding of the challenges individuals and families face when seeking support - and how to walk alongside them with care and skill.
Through hands-on experience, training, supervision, and a supportive team, I’ve grown in empathy, refined my clinical judgment, and built the confidence to step into this work with purpose.
This internship reaffirmed my commitment to becoming a thoughtful, compassionate therapist. As I move forward in my career, I’m grateful for the foundation ABHS has helped me build - and I’m excited to carry these lessons with me as I continue supporting children, youth, and families.
